Core French is a second language program in which French is taught as a subject. The objective of the Core French program is to build a good foundation in French from which to pursue fluency and to introduce students to the basics of the French language and culture. Core French is taught in many Saskatchewan schools

Saskatchewan Learning suggests that students begin to learn French at an early age. The curriculum guides were prepared assuming a grade one start and recommend the following time allocations for the teaching of Core French:

Kindergarten to grade 5                     no less than 30 minutes four times a week

Grades 6 - 9                                      minimum of 150 minutes per week

Grades 10 - 12                                  100 hours per credit/course

A step towards bilingualism?

The K-12 Core French program facilitates the development of language skills that will enable students to communicate in French. Students will develop strategies and skills that will enable them to function with confidence in authentic language situations. It fosters in students a comprehension of the language learning process and of the general nature of language. The Core French program also provides many cognitive and other benefits to students such as enhanced first language skills, enhanced listening and memory skills, enhanced post-secondary and employment opportunities. This program does not help students become bilingual, as does the immersion program.
