Francophone Schools
What Francophone schools have to offer
Saskatchewan's 12 francophone schools are designed for students of Francophone heritage. Francophone schools offer a quality education in first-language French, a program which includes the required English classes from Grade 4 onward. Your child does not need to speak French before attending a francophone school.
There are two significant differences between francophone and French immersion schools :
- First, in francophone schools, all subjects except English are taught in French from preschool to Grade 12, whereas in French immersion high schools more subjects are gradually taught in EnglishSecondly,
- Because they are designed for Francophones, all activities in francophone schools take place in French as well - music, drama and sports.
There is no need to worry that your child’s English will suffer. Francophone schools offer the same English curriculum that is required in all Saskatchewan schools, and students successfully pass the same departmental exams that students in English schools also have to write.
As an integral part of Saskatchewan's francophone community, a francophone school allows kids with a French background to truly share their culture, their values and their heritage. This community is growing more and more diverse as Francophones from across the world move to our province with their families.
If you grew up in a francophone family, are of French heritage, or are fluent in French, you should consider sending your child to a francophone school because they are designed specifically to:- guarantee bilingualism
- promote a sense of cultural identity and belonging to the French-Canadian community
- strengthen children's pride in being francophone
- help children define themselves as part of dynamic and diverse group
- allow children to grow by preparing them for an interdependent and evolving world
